Course Description

Mental health and social-emotional problems have demonstrated a significant impact on a child’s health and well-being. Specifically, 4.5 million children ages 3 to 17 have been diagnosed with a behavioral problem, approximately 4.4 million children have been diagnosed with anxiety, and an additional 1.9 million children have been diagnosed with depression (CDC, 2022). In the first part of the presentation, Dr. Sollom will teach the signs and symptoms of common mental health disorders in young people. Several mental health disorders will be discussed including separation anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, clinical depression, and PTSD. In the second part of the presentation, Dr. Sollom will identify the risk factors, protective factors, and research-based warning signs for youth suicide. Guidance will be given regarding best practices and appropriate interventions to use.
